Does anyone here make their own baby food?
I'm a single mom of a 4 month old and he's started eating a little bit of Stage 1 fruits & veggies (after getting the Doc's advice, of course).
I'm thinking that the already made stuff that you buy in the store obviously has preservatives and stuff like that in it and I would much rather try to make his food at home so I know for a fact of what is in it. Also, I'm thinking that if I make him healthy foods, I'll be more likely to eat healthier as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions about making your own baby food? I really don't know much about it at all - my friends who have children have never made their own.
Like, I know you make it and then freeze it... But do you put it in the microwave to defrost it when you are ready to feed it to your baby or do you need to let it thaw by itself?
Sorry if these seem like dumb questions, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing!
Thanks!

You can put whatever you want in it. Just steam/cook and then put in breast milk or formula and blend until the right consistency. Once they are older you can keep it a little thicker.
I use the silicone muffin pans to freeze, it makes popping out easier. Once frozen, you can pop out and put into plastic bags.
When you need it, just pop one out and microwave in a glass/porcelain (just not plastic) bowl. Add more liquid if needed. Just stir really well because it will get hot-spots.
I saved a ton of money this way. One two hour period can make 40 jars in various compositions.
I hope this helps.
1meumitsuki has good advice. Careful with the microwave and hot spots like she said. the only extra thing I remember was about carrots- how the jarred food is better because home made would introduce more nitrites? Something like that- try babycenter.com for great information about ALL baby topics.
2I had all intentions of making homemade babyfood with my first child, but never did. Now with my second, he is having trouble with solids. So, I went to Babies R Us, and picked up a food mill. It works pretty good. It comes in a carrying case. You can put in foods and you turn the crank and it makes pureed baby food. THe food has to be cooked/soft. Last night we had pot roast, I put some meat, potatoes and carrots and it grinded it up nicely. It's by KidCo and it's just called Food Mill. I think it was around $12 or $13. I'm looking forward to putting more fruits and vegetables in it. You can probably find it on Amazon, too.
3Awesome!
Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm planning on starting to do this as soon as I can... Maybe this weekend.
LOL
4Hi! I know I'm a bit late on this and that you already got great advice, but I wanted to throw in my two cents and say that I've been making all of Jack's food since he's started on solids (except baby oatmeal, which comes out of a box). It's really easy to make a whole batch and freeze for several weeks. At night, I just take out the cubes out of the freezer and transfer them to the fridge to defrost for the next day. It saves a lot of time and money!
5Awesome, thanks again for everyone's help!
I'm not much of a home-maker, so this homemade stuff is kinda new to me, hahaha!
I must be doing something right though... At dinner time this is what my son looks like
hahahaha!
6So glad to hear it's going well. That is a happy camper!
