Something borrowed, something blue, and something . . .

The holidays are ripe with rich family traditions — from opening one present on Christmas Eve, making homemade treats, cutting down a tree to wearing silly matching PJs and giving dad or grandpa the gift of ugly ties. In my family, taking a photo of the entire crew in their Christmas Day garb has been a staple tradition since I was a child, but we sneak in plenty of more seasonal and fun customs — especially now that the "kids" have kids — like making popcorn and watching Christmas flicks and eating my aunt's almost inedible fruitcake. What is your family's favorite holiday practice?

Thanksgiving is almost here, and it might just be my favorite holiday. Every year my family gets together for a big party at my aunt's house. I always look forward to the classic food like turkey and mashed potatoes, but I also love the dishes specific to my family, like my mom's spicy jalapeno cranberry sauce or the creamed onions made according to my grandma's recipe.

Whether you're visiting the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins, or trick-or-treating, most every family has some sort of Halloween tradition they follow year after year. Some do all or none of the above. As my children grow older, it is apparent that our once simple night of staying in and greeting neighborhood goblins is over and a long list of parties and candy collecting is ahead.

The turkey is cooked, the gravy is steaming and the cranberries are waiting to pop. Just before families dig into their fruitful feast, they sit down to give thanks for the past year's blessings. Instead of waiting until the end of the month, start a new family tradition and have everyone start writing down things they are thankful for at the dinner table every night leading up to the festivities.

It may be hard bidding camp adieu or putting all of that pool paraphernalia away, but like all good things — Summer must come to an end. In anticipation for the big first day back to school, mother may buy her child a new outfit, polish an apple for the teacher, or bake a celebratory cake for the inaugural day.
At my house, every last night of Summer ended with my sister and I laying out our outfits for the first day of school on our beds.

I think one of the best parts about being in a relationship is creating new traditions together, unique to the life you live as a couple. Of course, incorporating each other's family traditions is always fun, but so is instating an after-Thanksgiving hike with your hubby every year or a putting up Christmas lights while eating your leftovers. If this is something you've done in your relationship, tell us, what holiday traditions have you created with your significant other?

The overturning of the ban on same-sex marriage in California has changed many lives and simultaneously sparked a slew of arguments. In fact, as reported by the Sacramento Bee, a recently wed couple — Rachel Bird and Gideon Codding — are starting their own debate over the wording of the new gender-neutral marriage license, which has changed the traditional reference of Bride and Groom to Party A and Party B.
Bird offered her own explanation, saying: "We are traditionalists — we just want to be called bride and groom," and for this couple, anything else is unacceptable; they refuse to sign the license as-is.

Different cultures celebrate births in various ways. In China, it is common practice for elders to cook chicken and rub the tongue of the bird over the child's lips in hopes of a good talker on her first birthday. Some Indian newborns are dropped off a tower 15 meters high onto a white sheet in hopes of a healthy and strong future.

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, so I'm sure most of you are getting your plans in order as we speak. Getting a reservation or coming up with a unique way to celebrate with your loved one can be stressful, which is why so many couples come up with a Valentine's tradition to rely on. My parents have been doing the same thing for years now — it gives them something to look forward to — but what about you?
